“Cromagnon was an American experimental band that was active during the late 1960s. Led by multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriters Austin Grasmere and Brian Elliot, the band released Orgasm in 1969 which was later reissued as Cave Rock. They are said to have foreshadowed the rise of noise rock, no wave, and industrial rock. While the band was not commercially notable or successful, Pitchfork Media ranked the song “Caledonia”, later covered by Japanese experimental band Ghost, at number 163 on their list of “The 200 Greatest Songs of the 1960s”.”

Part of the interest certainly stemmed from its liberal doses of searing fuzz guitar. Part of it sprung from the oddity of it all: India, a country that had, quite literally, churned out tens of thousands of albums during psych- and hard-rock’s heyday, only produced this one, lonely psychedelic album? Part of it sprung from the album’s rarity: unknown for years, Obsession ’77 suddenly became a top want on every global-rock collector’s short-list.”

Tehran’s most exotic musician led a swank & cosmopolitan life, and his deep, low voice lends itself easily to bursting arrangements of snazzy lounge funk. Get your ears on the cuts that have been making DJs drool across Europe and the States.
“Much of the music on this compilation that covers the “golden years” of the movement (from approximately 1970 until 1982) and springs from the Bollywood film industry. Thus, Psych Funk Sa Re Ga! compiles some of the work of composers such as R.D. Burman and the brothers known as Kalyanji Anandji – specifically their experiments in the fusion of India’s classical traditions of Hindustani and Carnatic music, folk music such as bhangra and dandiya and Western psychedelia and funk music.

Psych Funk Sa Re Ga! also includes off the beaten path Indian experiments in Psych Funk – for example, two songs from the Simla Beat garage-psych albums, and an oft-heard Deep Purple cover by the ground-breaking Atomic Forest – alongside examples of the Indian Psych Funk influence on European 70s musicians. Throughout the extensive liner notes – many of which delve into the history of the musicians and ensembles behind these little-heard classics – World Psychedelic Funk Classics attempts to broaden the definition of global psychedelia and shine light on the Indian progenitors of some of the wildest, funkiest, fuzziest music this world has ever heard.”

taken from Zeendooni (2LP/CD), Pharaway Sounds

“Zendooni celebrates a time when Pop artists in Iran ruled the country. During the 70s, before the Revolution, Occidental and Middle East mannerisms collided and the result was a new kind of Iranian Pop which incorpotated different genres and arrangements to its Persian roots. Touches of Funk, Jazz, Latin, Bossa, Progressive- Psychedelic sounds and Morricone / Blaxploitation styled soundtracks can be heard on this collection, culled from miraculously survived vinyls and cassettes.”

“…Tehran pop tunes often have melodic phrases common to the traditional dastgah system. Here, those modes & scales impact with some western instrumentation that’s audibly swankier than any you might’ve bumped into elsewhere. Funky, slick & stiletto- heeled pianos & strings sparkle with the same foxy wit as any 3am jazz session, Boogaloo or Blaxploitation tune. You’ll hear cuts & swivels that would make Quincy Jones jealous right alongside santur, tar, or tonbak. The blend makes for riveting & unexpected music…” (Angela Sawyer, Weirdo Records, USA)

“Dear One” is taken from their only LP “A lovely sight”, recorded in 1969 but surprisingly was never published until 2009 when Chicago based label Numero Group finally released it. Imagine P.J. Harvey jams with The Velvet Underground.
“1969’s A Lovely Sight, Pisces’ only attempt at an LP, never made wax; but the fuzz guitar phrases and tambourine shuffle of “Dear One” instantly illustrate the band’s woozy realm. Deeper inside, bass scales borrowed from Sgt. Pepper give way to Who moves wrecked by bad fidelity and harsh intrusions of found sounds. Jefferson Airplane’s swirled, lysergic Haight Street utopia melds with the urban narcosis of the Velvet Underground’s East Village. But Pisces hailed from another ghost town altogether: Rockford, Illinois, where rusted, endless plains bear close resemblance to a bummer acid trip or a junkie’s rock bottom. In 1969, the industrial Midwest was hurting for the hard stuff, but what it got was plenty of the White Album - enough to have Jim Krein, Paul DiVenti, and Linda Bruner recording through a glass onion all their own. The unsettling balance of their unissued LP combines homespun psychedelic vision and secondhand studio trickery with naive readings of the rock sound of the day, resulting in a diverse, haunted rock headspace few coastal bands ever flew through, let alone over.”

Fifty Foot Hose - If Not This Time {1968}

The band split in 1970 but reformed in 1994. The bright people at Weasel Disc Records re-realesed “Cauldron” at that time recognizing that the experimental sound and the unusual compositional structure of the music and the early use of electronic instruments made them precursors to bands like Throbbling Gristle, Pere Ubu and Chrome. The band recorded a live album and two new studio albums in 1997 and 1998. Founder and bass player Cork Marcheschi works as an artist producing public sculptures with psychedelic influences.

Tonto’s Expanding Head Band is a electronic music project by Malcolm Cecil and Robert Marguleff. Cecil started to build the first and still the largest multitimbral polyphonic analog synthesizer in the world called TONTO (“The Original New Timbral Orchestra”) in 1968. The duo released only two albums and became popular as session musicians for Stevie Wonder. TONTO was featured on albums by Quincy Jones, Bobby Womack, The Isley Brothers, Gil Scott-Heron and Joan Baez and was also used in movie “Phantom of the Paradise” by Brian De Palma in 1974.
